Shannon Shapiro is a designer from Los Angeles who
creates lighting, furniture and interiors that are
inspired from nature. Always passionate about art,
sports and travel, Shannon first became a
competitive cyclist in the US and Europe. Then, with
the help of famed photographer Bruce Weber, Shannon
began a new career as a photo stylist and set
designer for international magazines and television
commercials. Her art and design skills were refined
by a six-year apprenticeship with her mentor Arthur Andersson, former partner of world renowned
architect Charles Moore and an MFA from the
California Institute of Arts.
Shannon founded her own interior design firm in
1998, creating edgy yet comfortable interiors for a
number of major celebrities in Los Angeles as well
as major residential and commercial projects in LA,
Chicago, Boston, and the United Kingdom. While
continuing to work as a metal sculptor Shannon began
turning her vision of nature and natural objects
into products for her clients. This was the genesis
of Moth Design in 2000.
As the founder and principal designer for Moth
Design, Shannon has been able to further spread her
creative wings into new areas and products, focusing
initially on lighting and expanding into furniture
and furnishings. Famous for her coral lighting
Shannon admits she is an avid athlete who loves the
outdoors and strives to find ways to bring the
“outside” in, “…wind is inspiring to me…particularly
its effect on water, trees, coral, grass…all
elements of nature. The interiors I had been
designing were elegant and calming but static. I
wanted to introduce organic elements to evoke a
vitality or sense of respiration in a room.”
Originally making each light by hand, Shannon has
grown Moth Design into a major luxury lighting
collection represented by top showrooms and high-end
retail stores around the US. She continues to push
the envelope and develop new products for Moth
Design that challenge our view of interiors and
design.
